May 7, 2011 · Hi, I'm in the process of restoring my neighbors cast iron/wooden slat bench. This is my 3rd restoration. Most bench slats are 48"x 2 1/2"x 3/4". I cut my own using various woods, and replacing the bolts, nuts & washers. I've used a reciprocating saw to cut hard rusted bolts. Used different stains for looks and protected with varathanes. Step 3: Add Wood Filler. Before applying the wood filler, I lightly sanded the bench with 80-grit sandpaper and wiped the bench down with denatured alcohol. Using a putty knife, I added wood filler into the cracks on the sides & top corners of the bench. I let dry and re-applied to any areas with holes/pits remaining.Features.
